HISTORY CENTRAL NOTES
Yankee Homecoming 2023 is coming! Festivities run from July 29 – August 6.
One of the many events that honor the history of Newburyport is "If This House Could Talk". Residents are invited to join in by writing and sometimes, illustrating, a story their house might tell if it could talk. Could be about an interesting person who lived there, an event that happened in it, how it was built, etc. These informative stories are posted on or near each house and will be a highlight on a walk around town.
Central History has presented our own version of this for the past few years- we call it "If This Church Could Talk". During Yankee Homecoming this year, look for Central's poster near our LittleFree Library 'Central Reads' at 14 Titcomb Street. It tells the story of the 3 downtown churches that merged and chose a new name and one site in 1909.
And that's why Central Congregational Church sits here on the corner of Pleasant and Titcomb Streets on the foundation of old North Church. The Central Church sanctuary will be open to view during Yankee Homecoming, weekdays 11am – 2pm. Enter through the side entry and check in at the office. See the striking stained glass windows and architecture.
