Ringing in the “Road to Revolution”

In keeping with a promise, the bells of Central Congregational Church, Titcomb Street, will again be rung this year at noon on February 14th. The pealing bell this year draws attention to the start of Revolutionary War’s 250th Anniversary commemorations, many of which will be happening locally. Many well-known historical events in our area marked the start of the Revolution. The battles at Concord and Lexington, Leslie’s Retreat in Salem, and the Battle of Bunker Hill will be remembered this year with reenactments, speakers, parades and other special events. Benedict Arnold’s Expedition to conquer Quebec, which launched from Newburyport, will be the focus of many city events in June and September. Central Church has a unique connection to the Expedition. Rev. Samuel Spring was the chaplain in 1775 for the 1,100 northbound soldiers. As the troop ships stood ready in Newburyport harbor, Rev. Spring gave a rousing and fortifying sermon to the departing soldiers at Old South Church on Federal Street. Newburyport residents heard the oration and were impressed. Members from North Church (now Central Church), wrote to Rev. Spring, inviting to serve as their pastor. Rev. Spring responded from Ticonderoga after the failed Quebec Expedition, to say that he would consider the job offer only after he completed his patriot duty to the military. In 1777 he accepted the position where he remained the minister for 42 years, until his death. During the coming year you will hear city bells ring out to commemorate significant events which led to the formation of the United States.

We will gather in the bell tower at 11:30 a.m. for the commemorative bell ringing at 12:00 p.m.
